STEPS — RAP (Read, Ask, Pray)
1. Read: Gaze at the Image
I look gently at the image of the Prodigal Son.
I slow my breathing.
I take in each figure, each posture, each expression.
I let the scene wash over me without rushing, trusting that the Holy Spirit speaks through what I notice.
2. Ask: “Where am I in this story today?”
Abba Father, show me my place in this picture…
• In the background — Have I busied myself with everything except You?
• Sitting and beating my breast — Have I feared approaching You or Confession because of my sin and weakness?
• The closed-armed elder brother — Have I been guarded, tight, or resistant to Your love?
• The beloved child in Your embrace — Have I let myself be held, forgiven, and restored?
I notice gently, without judgment, trusting the Father’s kindness and clarity.
3. Pray: Enter the Embrace
I turn again to the Father holding His child.
I let myself step into that space, into those arms.
I rest for a few quiet moments.
I feel the Father’s hands on my back… His warmth… His steady breath.
I let His love land in the places I need it most.
Then I ask: “Father, is there anything You want to say to me right now?”
I listen for His whisper in the silence.
If you get distracted, ask Him the question again…
Beautiful examen! Thank you so much!
