The REAL Meaning of Spy Wednesday | Holy Week Reflections with Fr. Richard

Here’s a 1 minute video explaining Spy Wednesday:

Today, on this this Wednesday of Holy Week, known in tradition as Spy Wednesday, the Gospel invites us into the shadows—to watch, to listen, and to choose. It is the day we remember Judas Iscariot slipping away to betray Jesus, conspiring with the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver. Judas, the spy, seeks to hand over the Son of Man. It is a dark plot, one that brings us face-to-face with the mystery of sin and betrayal.

But hidden within this same Gospel is another kind of conspiracy—Jesus, too, is moving quietly, intentionally. He sends His disciples ahead to prepare the Passover. He, too, is planning. But His is not a conspiracy of destruction; it is a plan for redemption. On Holy Thursday, this plan will unfold with the institution of the Eucharist and the gift of the priesthood—divine strategies that will ultimately defeat sin and death.

Today, we are invited to ask: With whom do I conspire? Do I join Judas, betraying Jesus through sin, compromise, or indifference? Or do I conspire with Jesus—cooperating with His mission, preparing a place for Him in my heart, and participating in His plan to redeem the world?

This day sets the dramatic stage for the events of the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday), and invites Christians to examine their own fidelity: Are we like Judas, seeking our own will in secrecy? Or like the faithful disciples, preparing our hearts to suffer and rise with Christ?

Lent draws to a close, and the battle intensifies. Let us choose to be with Jesus. Let us conspire with Him for victory.
