Perseverance in Mental Prayer
- Perseverance in mental prayer is the narrow gate that opens the Kingdom of Heaven to us; it is the only way for us to receive the gifts which “no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, that God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9).
- Mental prayer is the source of true happiness.
- The goal of mental prayer is not knowledge but love.
“God needs not our works, but is thirsty for our love.” – St. Therese of Lisieux
Prayer = Love of God
- Prayer is to remain in God’s presence and let him love us.
- Allow God’s presence to dwell in our hearts.
- The deepest centre of our soul is God.
- Mental prayer is no more than an exercise in loving God.
- Let God have the joy of loving us.
- The heart must be pierced – God must touch us at such a deep level of our being that we cannot do without him any more.
- The proper response to distractions during prayer is not for the mind to concentrate harder but for the heart to love more intensely.
- Very often what determines our progress and deepening of mental prayer is not what we do during prayer time but the rest of the time.
“In prayer, what counts is not to think a lot but to love a lot.” – St. Teresa of Avila
