Wisdom’s Meal by Fr Robert Barron

Summary from WOF: Today’s first reading personifies Wisdom as a woman who invites people to a feast, lavishly offering food and wine. In today’s Psalm, we echo that invitation: “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” But to join the banquet of the Lord, we need to turn away from other food. We spend our whole lives eating from troughs that never satisfy our hunger – wealth, power, pleasure, honor. But in John 6, which is today’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to feed on himself, Wisdom incarnate, the only food that will ultimately fulfill our hunger.

1st reading Proverbs: the Wisdom of God is a woman preparing her banquet & lavishly invites everyone. In the Bible, God is incomparably generous eager to offer to us what he has for the world. Spiritual life is a willingness to come to the feast. God is lavishly offering his life.

You have to turn away from other sources of food if you want to eat at the heavenly banquet. Stop feeding on things that will never satisfy you – wealth, pleasure, power, junk food.

2nd letter Paul Ephesians: Must of our quest for happiness in the world is disguised in our quest for God. The Spirit is offered freely, let yourself be filled be it.

Jesus is the divine wisdom become incarnate.

John 6 Jesus endeavours to feed us with Himself. Now the deepest meaning in Proverbs becomes clear. Wisdom wants us to feed on His very self. “I am the living bread come down from heaven, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” If you want eternal life, you have to become eternalized. The Eucharist equips us for life in the heavenly realm.

The crowd is confused.

Remaining in Christ. The eating and drinking of his flesh and blood is the way we remain in Him.

Come and eat of the banquet God has laid out.
