Freedom is a wholehearted wanting linked with the rest of reality. Unless we can approve something reflectively – i.e., taking into account all its implications and consequences – we cannot fully want it. Far too often, people are inwardly divided, they don’t really want what they choose and this destroys freedom at its core.
Tips:
- Cultivate a habit of sustained reflection, of stepping back from immediate goods and enjoyments to see where they lead
- Refuse to endorse your initial reactions until the credential of your wanting has been checked and validated.
