Summary: Wanting What we Want by Johann

Freedom is a wholehearted wanting linked with the rest of reality. Unless we can approve something reflectively – i.e., taking into account all its implications and consequences – we cannot fully want it. Far too often, people are inwardly divided, they don’t really want what they choose and this destroys freedom at its core.

Tips:

  1. Cultivate a habit of sustained reflection, of stepping back from immediate goods and enjoyments to see where they lead
  2. Refuse to endorse your initial reactions until the credential of your wanting has been checked and validated.
