Spiritual Warfare by Dan Burke

In his section on spiritual warfare, I found the following points most helpful:

Spiritual warfare is primarily a war in the mind

In order to win this battle, which Dan Burke conceives of as primarily a battle for the peace that Christ promises us (cf. John 14:27), we must “take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Cor 10:3-5). This involves 2 steps:

1. Rejecting lies: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7)

In order to be aware of the lies in your mind, ask yourself what causes you anxiety? fear? despair? disruption of mind and heart? Keep in mind that any of these distresses are really invitations from God for deeper healing.

“In Jesus’ name, I reject the lie that I am _________.”

2. Proclaiming truths: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

In order to proclaim this truth, try memorizing Scripture verses (like Jesus did in the desert), praying often (cf. Philippians 4:6), and setting your mind on holy things (cf. Phil 4:8-9), that is, only allowing media and other content into your mind that fosters true peace.

In Jesus’ name, I embrace the truth that ________.”

One step at a time! One thought captive at a time. One lie redeemed and replaced by the truth at a time. Sometimes the battle regarding a specific lie will take weeks, months, and even years to overcome. But the miracle will happen. Christ promises it.

It’s worth it! Based on the truth of Scripture and the experience of men like St. Paul, taking every thought captive can make us so resilient in life that nothing, not even the worst circumstances, can rob us of joy and peace!
