Pope Benedict XVI’s Opposition to Co-Redemptrix

Pope Benedict XVI, as Cardinal Ratzinger criticized the title, stating that it is prone to misunderstanding because it departs too far from the language of Scripture and Church Fathers, concluding: “For matters of faith, continuity of terminology with the language of Scripture and that of the Fathers is itself an essential element; it is improper simply to manipulate language.” Furthermore, he argued that the title’s intended meaning is better conveyed in existing Marian titles, as they do not obscure the reality of Christ’s redemption.

Pope Benedict XVI in speaking to the sick at Fatima on May 13, 2010 invited them to be “redeemers in the Redeemer.”
