Thoughts:

  • Jesus did not seem to be a person who worried a great deal; he lived his life on the principle of trusting his heavenly Father, and he tried to teach his followers to do the same.
  • Tells us not to worry 6 times.
  • The three Scripture readings for this Sunday invite us to reflect on God’s providential care of us.
  • Trust in God brings freedom from fear.
  • The readings this Sunday pose a challenge to us. Do we really believe that God cares for us, that he alone can provide for all our needs? Do we believe that he loves us more than a mother loves the infant at her breast, as God himself promises in this week’s beautiful First Reading? Do we really trust that he is our rock and salvation, as we sing in the Psalm?

 

Isaiah 49:14–15

But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me,
    my Lord has forgotten me.”
15 Can a woman forget her nursing child,
    or show no compassion for the child of her womb?
Even these may forget,
    yet I will not forget you.

  • Zion = refers the mountain upon which Jerusalem is built.
  • This is possibly the most touching expression of God’s love in the entire Bible. God is, after all, our Father, and we are His adopted children. Saint John points this out in his gospel (John 3:16) where he says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” The feminine image of God is natural in the setting of Jerusalem (Zion), a walled city, being pictured as being pregnant and filled with life.
