THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH by Bishop Barron

  • Shows us the Church in action in its earliest days.
  • “Distant mirror” in this 1st reading.
  • 1st Synod in the Church. Council of Jerusalem.
  • Messy situation.
  • Issued edict – new converts not to be burdened by all matters of the Mosaic law.
  • “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…” = earliest acknowledgment we have that Church saw itself as guided by Holy Spirit when it gathered in formal deliberation. Not a matter of human beings hammering out a law, its the Holy Spirit involved in this process.
  • Notice how the Church is alive! and ever-developing.
  • “To live is to change & to be perfect is to change often” ~ John Henry Newman –> animal has to be on the move & react to its environment.
