2. Statue God

Unloving God-Image: Statue God.

  • Description: Statue God is remote, distant, impersonal, indifferent, stoney, cold, unfeeling, uncaring, disengaged. He just stands there and looks at me working out things on my own. 
  • Potential Reasons for this God-Image: Your parents were too busy and self-absorbed to offer you help. As a result, you realized that they will not meet your needs and you got used to being independent and alone.

Unlovable Self-Image: I don’t get helped (“Loner Larry”).

  • Description: Since Statue God is far removed from my life and won’t help me, I avoid God and try to manage on my own. As a result, I am very motivated to create a good society that is safe and secure. 
  • Related Scripture Passage: “I cry to you, but you do not answer me; I stand, but you take no notice” (Job 30:20).

Loving God-Image: Actively Kind. 

  • Description: Jesus revealed that God always takes the initiative and is abundantly kind, generous, and thoughtful in relating to you. 
  • Related Scripture Passage: 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:35-41). 

Lovable Self-Image: I’m helped.

  • Description: I’m worth God’s active help and intervention in my life; I don’t have to manage on my own because when I need help God is there for me. God loves me enough to relate personally with me. Jesus is not only in my boat, He is actively kind, able to calm the storms of my life.
